The LifeScan press release provides more background on these outstanding recipients. Each received a memorial plaque and a $5000 cash prize.
Paula Harper, DESA President and Founder, opened the awards presentation by recognizing the vision and 11-year support of LifeScan, Inc in sponsoring the Awards Program. Monique arrived at the Colorado Conference just two weeks after competing in the Race Across America, a grueling race that she and her TeamType 1 Teammates won in record time. She told the assembly of the huge mental challenge of keeping up a 100% all-out pace for her segments over the five days. Monique also told of how she founded the organization Hypoactive back home in Victoria to provide people with diabetes opportunities for physical challenges and goals. Mauro treated the assembly to a wonderfully prepared video of his competition in the 100 km Arctic Circle race, in which, against unbelievable hardships and a bout of hypoglycemia with only 5 km to go, he finished third in a total field of 140 entrants. Emily shared her experience and determination to succeed. Faced with diabetes at a young age, she was driven to become the best softball pitcher and student possible. In addition to her many softball honors in California, Emily has received a scholarship to play softball at Brown University. She also graduates as Valedictorian of her high school class.
