About Diabetes

Gestational: A form of type 2 diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a form of type 2 diabetes that results from increased insulin resistance during pregnancy, particularly the third trimester, which usually resolves post-pregnancy without intervention.  However, its occurrence does increase the mother's risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in her lifetime.  Most women are screened for GDM by the 24th week of their pregnancy with an oral glucose test and may be put on insulin to control blood sugars in a normal range.  Any woman who has given birth to a baby weighing nine pounds or more likely had GDM.
