2nd Annual Conference & Mountain-based
Meet
You will be pleased to know that following the success of the Mountains
for Active Diabetics (MAD) weekend and conference at Plas Y Brenin in
March 2003, MADIDEA in 2004 will be held out in the Ecrins National Park,
France.
The event will be based in Vallouise, and will be preceded by a 3-day
alpine meet starting on 23rd June.
Just to give you a taste of things to come - guest speakers confirmed
so far, include:
Herbert Hausmann from Germany (first person with diabetes to complete
the Marathon des Sables a 143 mile ultra marathon in the Sahara Desert
and winner of the Diabetes Exercise and Sports Association Athletic Achievement
in 1998 - amongst many other fine achievements.
Will Cross from UK / USA: - Conqueror of the North and South Poles,
Summiter of Aconcagua, crosser of the Sahara and team leader of the 2004
Everest Expedition to place the first person with diabetes on the summit
of Everest...
Ernest Bladé from Catalunya, Spain - who is one of the worlds
most accomplished diabetic mountaineers, with climbing and mountaineering
experience rivaling the world's top professional climbers....
- Amongst many others, as well as a remarkable number of athletes and
mountain experts from all over the world attending the conference and
alpine meet.
This will be one weekend and meet that you can't afford to miss, with
lots of information and discussions about diabetes management, different
diabetes therapies, effects of altitude and extreme environments on diabetes;
blood glucose meters and much more, including details of one forthcoming
initiative for youngsters with diabetes called "Mountain MAD-ness" - a
2 day introductory mountaineering course for 15-21yr olds. The pre weekend
activities will be based around alpine routes, high level mountain walks,
via ferratas, rock climbing, mountain biking, walking etc.
This event is aimed at anyone who has an interest in the mountains as
well as diabetes - whether you suffer from diabetes or have friends or
family who suffer from the condition, or whether you deal with people
in the outdoors who may have the condition or whether you are a health
care professional wishing to develop more skills and information for dealing
with questions about diabetes in the mountains. Whether you are newly
diagnosed and wish to acquire some new skills and confidence in dealing
with condition in the mountains, or whether you can offer advice and inspiration
to others - everyone is welcome.
